Sumayya Mehtar (aka Desert Moon) is the director of Medix pharmacy in Florida. She returned to
South Africa 6 years ago after spending almost five years in the Najd region of Saudi Arabia working as an emergency pharmacist.She hails from a traditional Indian Muslim family from South Africa whose roots go back to Gujurat, India. She is from the lineage of Sheikh Moosajee Mehtar RA,a pious individual who resided in Tadkeshwar,India. The famous poet and author Farooqi Mehtar also belongs to her family and perhaps it is from him as well as her paternal grandfather that she seeks the inspiration to write articles on various subjects. She is well read and considers writing a hobby rather than a career. She completed her primary and secondary schooling in a small Indian town called Azaadville in South Africa. This is the town she grew up in. Her tertiary education was completed at the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. She has won numerous speech contests, speech and drama as well debating competitions at school as well as at university level. Having worked as a pharmacist at numerous world class hospitals during her career she has managed to meet and treat various famous individuals ranging from Nelson Mandela,a few African presidents, television personalities, and numerous royal family members based in the Middle East region.
Writing is her way of expressing her opinions about issues and events that are occurring around her in this ever changing world that we all reside in. She comes from a family that is very compassionate towards the poor and the underprivileged, a family that is active in charity work in various countries around the world especially Malawi and hence all proceeds from her blog, Desert Moons Diary will be given away to charity. She encourages one and all to take time out to view the blog and make a contribution towards the poor and needy. She is also the presenter of the weekly Arab news segment on radio Al Ansaar. She is also a contributing author of the book " Riding the Samoosa Express" and "Saffron".
